Yosemite National Park, California | April 1979 & May 2015 Excerpt from my grandmother's travel journal on April 20th, 1979: "Entering Yosemite National Park at 12:40 -- clean and cool air, the smell of pine & redwoods, stopping at several photo spots, going through the long long tunnel, into the valley itself." #pastpresentproject The 'End 41' sign has since been moved just around the corner behind me, where cars come speeding along the road. Standing partially in the road for this photo proved difficult, as I had no warning of approaching vehicles. I imagined my grandmother standing watch on the other side of the road all those years ago, shouting warning to my grandfather as cars came speeding toward the bend. -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el11 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 8:18 PDT Castagnola’s at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, California | April 1979 & May 2015 Excerpt from my grandmother’s travel journal on April 27th, 1979: “The Cannery, green courts, full of specialty stores, restaurants, and cafes. Walked into one and had a big mug of good coffee, hot almond danish, and date bar – a three man band already gave a jazz concert in one corner!” #pastpresentproject -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el9 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 12:33 PDT White Sands Visitor Center, New Mexico | April 1979 & October 2014 Excerpt from my grandmother's travel journal: "Went into the park information center, saw some exhibitions in the Mexican style building (beams sticking out of the adobe flat roof houses) and went into the dunes on a paved road." #pastpresentproject Thirty-five years after my grandmother wrote this entry about White Sands National Monument in her travel journal, I had the chance today to capture the same image of the Visitor Center that my grandfather did. The park rangers working inside were fascinated by the photo, asked for a copy, and took my grandfather's name to accompany the photo in their archives. One ranger and I even went outside and enjoyed identifying the changes since the photo was taken. -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el7 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 6:39 PDT California's First Theatre in Monterey, California | April 1979 & May 2015 Excerpt from my grandmother’s travel journal on April 29th, 1979: “And started with the map to look at the historic houses – Custom House, Pacific House, Old Theater, Judges & Ambassadors House from Spanish time (before 1848) and the lovely gardens that belong to all of them." #pastpresentproject -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el6 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 8:02 PDT Groveland, California | April 1979 & May 2015 Excerpt from my grandmother's travel journal on April 23rd, 1979: "Groveland -- and the Iron Door Bar, 1849. And down towards a big lake 'New Don Pedro Reservoir' in steep and sharp curves." #pastpresentproject - When I entered the Iron Door Saloon, which happens to be the oldest saloon in California, I came across a man sitting at the bar who told me he was in 11th grade the year my grandfather's photo was taken. He went on to tell me that he and a few seniors used to park behind the bar and enjoy a few beers inside the bar after school. I believed him. I also had the chance to show the current young owner what his bar looked like in 1979, which he loved. When I offered him a copy of the photograph, his face lit up and he declared "That's badass!" -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el5 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 6:48 PDT Cafe Du Monde Worker in New Orleans, Louisiana | February 1978 & April 2014 A new generation of workers at the famous Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter. #pastpresentproject -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el4 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 5:02 PDT Columbia State Historic Park in Columbia, California | April 1979 & May 2015 Excerpt from my grandmother's travel journal on April 23rd, 1979: "A little side trip, sat for lunch in a little state park (with three brown buses & two vans of a religious cult -- barefoot, long-haired, in white long 'nightgowns' with wool ponchos) and then walked the old part of town, with bars, theater, Wells Fargo station, wooden boardwalks under wooden overhangs, but typical for this part of country -- everywhere the big iron doors!" #pastpresentproject -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el3 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 5:18 PDT Rock Creek Road in El Dorado County, California | April 1979 & May 2015 Excerpt from my grandmother's travel journal on April 24th, 1979: "We crossed the Rock Creek Road Bridge, the CCC had built in 1936 and Herb recognized. Beautiful slit of a valley, big rocks in the white & swirling water, yellow scotch broom in big blotches hanging over the sides. Down on the other side of Rock Creek Road to Placerville and across the American River again." #pastpresentproject - Special thanks to @tashabagosha for the great directions to this location! I had no idea how far along Rock Creek Road this bridge was, but she immediately recognized it and even said its one of her favorite swimming spots. -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el2 de Ago de 2015 a la(s) 5:50 PDT Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo in Carmel, California | April 1979 & May 2015 Excerpt from my grandmother's travel journal on April 30th, 1979: "Found our way to the Mission San Carlos Borromeo, 1770. Many courtyards with fountains, bushes, and flowers -- cypress, firethorn in white bloom and the red berries at the same time, fuchsia, agave, yucca, foxgloves 7' high!" #pastpresentproject -Una foto publicada por Christian Carollo (@sayhellotoamerica) el31 de Jul de 2015 a la(s) 4:24 PDT Market Square Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia | February 1978 & December 2014 The Market Square Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg has changed colors since my grandfather captured his photo in 1978.
