Toda la serie de billetes del Banco de Sudáfrica llevarán la imagen de Nelson Mandela, dijo el sábado el presidente del país en el 22do aniversario de la salida de prisión del icono de la lucha contra la segregación racial.
El presidente dijo que la liberación de Mandela después de 27 años en prisión por su lucha contra el apartheid “marcó el inicio de una nueva era de esperanza para nuestro país y el mundo”.
Zuma no dijo cuándo aparecerían los nuevos billetes. La imagen de Mandela aparecerá en todos los billetes, los cuales son emitidos en denominaciones de 10, 20, 50, 100 y 200 rands, dijeron funcionarios.
Medios locales de prensa reportaron que las conjeturas sobre la conferencia de prensa del gobierno programada para el sábado pusieron presión sobre el rand, pero la divisa revivió después de que funcionarios señalaron que el anuncio no sería sobre tasas de interés o cambios en el personal del banco central.
Mandela, de 93 años de edad y ganador del Premio Nobel de la Paz, se convirtió en el primer presidente de raza negra de Sudáfrica en 1994. Conocido cariñosamente por su nombre de tribu, Madiba, se encuentra retirado de la vida pública.
