El gigante anglo-australiano de la minería Rio Tinto anunció este miércoles el descubrimiento de un diamante rosa “notable”, de casi 13 quilates, que presenta como la piedra más rara y preciosa encontrada hasta ahora en Australia.
Bautizada Argyle Pink Jubilee (Jubileo Rosa Argyle), la piedra bruta de 12,76 quilates fue hallada en una mina de diamantes explotada por Rio Tinto en la región de Kimberley (oeste), precisó el grupo minero.
“Un diamante de este calibre no tiene precedente” en Australia, declaró Josephine Johnson, de la división Argyle Pink Diamonds. “Hemos tenido que esperar 26 años para extraer esta piedra y podría ser que no volvamos a ver otra semejante”.
La piedra, cuyo nombre es una referencia al jubileo de diamante de la reina Isabel, jefa de Estado de Australia, tiene un tono rosa claro, parecido al Williamson Pink (24 quilates) ofrecido a la reina de Inglaterra cuando contrajo matrimonio con el duque de Edimburgo en 1947. El Williamson fue descubierto el mismo año en Tanzania.
Un 90% de los diamantes rosas descubiertos en el mundo provienen de la mina Argyle de Kimberley, explotada por Rio Tinto, según el grupo.
